no… you practice monogamy. that is you are sexually active only with one another. continence is self control, ie; my wife and i postpone pregnancy by practicing continence when she is in the fertile part of her cycle. and abstinence is to abstain…from anything, hence the root word similarity. this pic is specifically in reference to the fact that abstinence as it pertains to intercourse is THE ONLY way to be 100% certain you’ll not start a life as a result. our Blessed Lady being the only person in existence to conceive having not yet known a man.

I do not think he is over-thinking the joke at all. That is exactly what I got from it. Though I will go on to add that I have heard many Christians say the only 100% way to ensure you don’t get pregnant is through abstinence. This throws lots of egg on those types of Christians faces.
