Think original NES or Sega Master system.
fewer bits meant less information that could eb thrown around for say, sprites and masking, sound etc.

I still play 8 and 16 bit constantly…cause programmers had to get creative, as did designers, instead of couting on a new generation of graphics and processors to counteract their crappiness with bling.
