I am a firefighter. The truck numbers have nothing to do with your area code, zip code or otherwise. Each state, county, city, village, district, etc… all have different numerical department designations. This engine’s from a department with the designation 400, and it is engine 4 from that department. With that hopefully clearing up some of the stupid comments on here…

Actually, if you look at the passenger door, it has the fairfax county fire-rescue seal. Being another firefighter who lives in fairfax county, I can attest to the fact that this is, in fact, engine 404 from station 404. The washington, DC area has put into effect a COG identification system that has given each county a number designator. Fairfax is 400, Loudoun is 600, DC is 0, etc. Following the 4, you get a station number. In this case, the station number is 4. That is how you get the 404. I believe that station 404 only has an engine and a medic that run out of it, so there is no unit number attached to this unit.
As for those of you who believe that these people are foolish for choosing their names the way they do, give them a break. We live in a world where people stab, shoot, poison, etc people every day of the year and we are here bashing each other over each other’s knowledge.

Wow, I’m a firefighter from Baltimore Co., The first thing I picked up on was the Fairfax patch. I never wanted to be a cop, I respect them, but never wanted to be one. I’m patriotic and not offended, I’m a firefighter and not offended, I have a sense of humor and am not offended.. (BTW, My Engine 202 is not in DC(202 is an area code in DC))
I guess you have to be a fire fighter to understand. Its a win win posting. Saving lives and fighting fires is all to serious. You have to have a sense of humer or you’ll go crazy in the EMS and Fire side of the fire department.

Now personally, as an FDNY Paramedic I have the deepest respect for the 3-5 emergency based professions in civil service, and thank you for your service to your fellow firemen while cooking, cleaning the house, and shining the chrome and diamond plate on the engine. But while your not saving the foundation of a burning structure or bi#ching about being called out for alarm activations there are EMTs and Paramedics that are out constantly saving lives and working our asses off to justify your paycheck and statistics, of which ours is a fraction. So Good for you there. But don’t ever presume that because you have a title, that you are entitled to the credit for what we do and get no recognition for. 200 years of history in the FD unimpeded by progress.
