  1. jd says:

polar bear populations are doing just fine. this isn’t accurate

  2. the environmentalist says:

this topic is too serious for such a desperately sad picture, and flippant comment. you do realize the bear in the picture will probably die for lack of frozen surface?

    • Ben says:

      Your mom’s a frozen surface.

    • Squirrel says:

But it’s the combination of all of these elements that makes it funny :D

    • Jaredvcxz says:

Did you know that the “leading scientists” who “discovered” global warming purposely messed up the facts in order to get money out of us?

Besides, that polar bear won’t die from lack of frozen surface. They’re excellent swimmers, so he’ll easily be able to get back to solid ground. Also they only need a cold air temperature, not surface temperature.

      • Eat Me says:

It’s not “global warming” genius. It’s “global climate change.” Get your facts right before sounding off and coming across like the hick you are.

        • dazed says:

          Climate changes. Cope.

What, you think climate _shouldn’t_ change?

          • Smitty says:

Climate changes. Things become extinct. Coastlines become submerged. Deal with it! You’ve had a good few million (or thousand if you prefer) years on this planet, Humanity. Thanks for prepping it for whatever takes over after you’re gone.

            • dazed says:

I think humans can manage to move in from coastlines by a few feet, or even miles, without much trouble. They can also move out as sea levels fall.

Ya know, sea levels rise & fall by a lot of feet every few _hours_. I don’t think a few more inches either way over a century would prove hard to cope with.

              • Smitty says:

Hey… When the world as we know it is under water, and your only hope of rescue from the marauding bands of drunken Exxon employees is a mutated Kevin Costner, don’t blame me!

              • vulture says:

I wonder what the 160 000 000 Bangladeshi and their immediate neighbours think about that. Or what YOU would think about a couple of ten million Bangladeshi refugees in your (I presume) beloved US of A. This is not about “a few feet”. Things are not as easy as “moving a few miles” either.

                • Jinny says:

However that may be, humans need to understand that the earth does its own thing and humans need to learn to adapt to the earth rather than trying to adapt the earth to our needs. People on the coastal areas that are sinking are going to *have* to move sooner or later. And since the whole world is selfish, I don’t think any country would care for 160 million refugees from any country to come over.

            • a white guy says:

yeah if polar bears are too fudging incompetent to shed their fur and adapt, then f*** em. cows grow and shed their fur when they are moved around between cold and warm, and birds actually migrate towards cities with warmer climates because warmth is a preference

              • George-Olduvai says:

Most of them are actually moving south and mating with grizzlies. This accounts for the falling population numbers in their former territory.

          • vulture says:

Not at the rate it’s changing at right now. And no, our wonderful economic and financial system, that allows you and me to have enough dough to afford electricity and a computer with internet access doesn’t like climate change. Any. In any direction. For any cause. (And yes, I do think the cause is humans.)

        • Janetmartin says:

          Oh, you drank the koolaid.

      • alskjdf says:

It’s true that polar bears can swim well and that image was taken out of context.

But your use of sarcastic quotation marks and vague assertion of a global scientific conspiracy make it clear you’re clueless about the science behind anthropogenic global warming. If you’d like to read about some of the studies on concrete ways global climate is harming polar bear populations, see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_bear#Global_warming .

      • vulture says:

I wish the scientists would “get the money out of whoever”. Also, the bears are excellent swimmers, but the distances they are required to swim are becoming larger and larger and more and more bears die of exhaustion as a consequence. And yes, they need a frozen surface (http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/22823/0).

      • The one who knows whats up says:

Don’t know what your talking about with the scientist but,

The frozen surface is necessary for the polar bears, because they do need colder temperatures, which are not accesible without the far north tundra where their is no land and only ice. If they can’t go far enough north it won’t be cold enough for the bears or their prey. Also while they are exellent swimmers bears are currently dieing because they are drowning. Thiers not enough ice for the bears to make it.

      • Agreeing_guy says:

First of all, global warming wasn’t “discovered”, it was monitored by several independent researchers over an extended period of time, while amassing evidence. The first published articles on the matter came back in the 70′s. It’s science, biatch.

Secondly, polar bears can’t catch seals while in the water. That solid surface will soon be no more.

    • californium says:

did you know that polar bear can swim for miles and miles? or maybe that the ice sheets are so large this year that Canadian and Norwegian fisherman are having to defend themselves from polar bears much further south than their native climate?
AGW is now a proven fraud, you’ll have to find some other way to extort my money from me.

      • Robert says:

You just proved you have no clue about climate science or glaciology. Ice sheets are not the same as Sea Ice, not the same in any shape or form. Sea ice is mostly seasonal and doesn’t affect sea level, ice sheets when they melt do affect sea level. The sea ice is important because of its effects on local climate but in the grand scheme of things, the ice sheets are by far the most important in terms of climate change. The ice sheets exist in antarctica and greenland and they are losing mass rapidly, see Rignot et al. 2008a,b and velicogna 2009 and cazenave et al. 2009 for some actual information. Please stop polluting this forum with your uneducated commentary.

    • SafetyManiac says:

Polar bears can swim 60 miles. Manmade global warming is a joke.

    • dazed says:

Do you realize polar bears regularly swim up to 100 miles? and that they tend to live at the boundary of ice & water where fishing is best, where ice melts in the spring and re-freezes in the fall? He’ll swim to another patch of ice or land, no problem.

Worrying about that bear is like worrying that a squirrel might fall out of a tree.

    • Tina says:

This is such a sad picture. I don’t understand why people don’t believe this is real!

      • dazed says:

The picture is real. So is the fact that the bear will think nothing of hopping off the ice and swimming to land, as he does on a regular basis.

    • Janetmartin says:

That bear was probably photoshopped, or in a zoo. ha, ha

    • boater407 says:

This picture has already been debunked. The photographer was getting shots of polar bears playing on ice floes, and Al Gore and his band of crooks stole the images to promote their carbon credits scheme.

    • the economist says:

That polar bear wasn’t just hanging out on that iceberg waiting as it slowly melted. It swam out and climbed up it, probably in search of some seals or something. Saying that global warming is the cause of polar bears looking lonely on some floating hunk of ice is COMPLETELY disingenuous. I mean seriously, polar bears DO swim; there aren’t, like, hundreds of bears marooned on melting icebergs out there.

      • auggie says:

it’s also anthropomorphism, which is why PETA is such a joke. poor little sea kittens getting fried up for our fish-and-chips.

seriously. PETA wanted people to start calling fish ‘sea kittens.’

    • bilobo says:

but polar bears can swim and the frozen surface is getting larger! global warming nuts are a bunch of flat-earthers!

    • Dr. Awesome says:

      ..Polar bears SWIM, smart one.

    • Foxfier says:

You realize a polar bear can swim for an incredible distance, right? 60+ miles, minimum?

  3. Joshua says:

    1. Polar bears are no where near endangered.
    2. Polar bears can swim, he isn’t trapped.
    3. Beyond alchemy, climate science is about as bogus a science as you can find. Just look at the news.

  4. Ryan T says:

Polar bear populations are fine FOR NOW

  5. Ryan T says:

That is, thanks to hunting regulation. The polar bear may be a sort of poster animal, when ecosystems are a bigger concern, but it seems that the science discusses a future threat to the species, as Arctic sea ice (area and/or thickness) reaches critical levels.

  6. Laughoutloud says:

Haha, you don’t even need the caption for it to be funny. (But it helps!!:)

  7. sen5241 says:

    Is that you, Senator Reid?

  8. Amy says:

Yes polar bears can swim Jared, but they need the ice to walk on to get out to their fishing grounds. The ice is melting earlier and earlier every year. They will become extinct if we do not do anything about climate change. It may already be too late. I don’t think this poster is funny at all.
The BBC Planet Earth series is very interesting and informative, I would highly recommend watching them.

    • DarkFlounder says:

      The ice isn’t melting.

And the Planet Earth series isn’t exactly a reliable unbiased source for the truth.

        • Keegan D says:

But you do realize that the site you link to is called “skepticalscience”, right? Like, that means that you expect us to take for facts something posted on a website devoted to things the people don’t often believe, or cannot be empirically proven? That your calling something obviously biased for the telling of unbelievable or hard to believe is an unbiased source?
Psh sir, shame on you. Shame.

Also, it’s global climate change. It’s a cycle for the love of Pete… Remember all those dino’s in their tropical conditions? Then we got hit by a meteor, or whatever your preferred general belief on how those big suckers died out (so glad the PETA weren’t around back then… they would of had us all in chains for causing the death of those “poor beloved deceased reptilian friends of humanity that just happened to have a few species that enjoyed nomming on us”…) And suddenly we have the Ice age. Then things warm up, then cool back down a bit, then warm up, then cool again. Whatever killed off the dino’s is the first start of the cycle that we know of. But since then, whatever caused it, we have a cycle of warm cold, warm cold. And thank, but thirty years ago (70′s-80′s) is when a lot of the “evidence” of global warming was “discovered”. Since then we’ve actually had the ice caps grow. Not shrink. All the data that says their shrinking that you find is usually actually from the 70s. Data fluctuation including, we’re hitting a peak, and it should start cooling again. Temperately, we’ve been breaking coldest, not hottest, temperature records since the 50′s and 60′s…. So there goes the “world’s getting hotter, stop ruining the world!” theory. Which, by the way, is a theory. Tests are yet to be decisive on any of this, because the history of the Earth, and recorded temperatures for as long as we have them, show’s enough fluctuation that a final decision is impossible to reach. We know that there has been a heating cycle for the past couple decades, but that was after several where it just got colder. That’s all the conclusion we can draw though. Looking at just a couple decades and declaring doom on a world with fluctuations spanning hundreds of years is like saying the sky is falling because a tree fell. It’s uncorrelated and un supported. Also, those people yelling the loudest for it are commonly tied to government funding, and to the organizations which are allowed to declare new codes and regulations in the name of “Global warming and protection”, which is obviously a clear case of political biased research.

  9. FutonLife says:

    I thought it was funny,
And BTW: It is getting warmer – be that natural (yes) or un-natural (unlikely) it is getting warmer.

    • Squirrel says:

idk i believe that right now it is natural, following trendlines that scientists have come up with (nobel conference 43) which show that the current average temperature is about at the same temperature which it has peaked at historically. However, there is a way higher concentration of CO2 in our atmosphere now than there was at any of these previous peaks, so by all odds the temperature will keep increasing rather than decreasing like it has in the past

      • zen says:

        you are a geek

      • BigMomma says:

There’s also significant evidence that shows all of the world’s above-ground volcanoes spew out more noxious gases than all of humanity can possibly hope to spew. It would appear very arrogant of us humans to think we are in some kind of control over Mother Nature. She doesn’t care if we blight her surface or not! We’re just pimples to be popped and forgotten.

      • FutonLife says:

This is true, and that is what is pushing the idea’s about our modern CO2 producing systems causing this little variable that can really screw with things.

      • Agreeing_guy says:

You seem to forget that the historical changes happened over periods of ten thousands of years. This is happening within a decade.

Also, science doesn’t care much for opinion. Plain fact shows it’s warming due to the greatly increased CO2 in the atmosphere.

        • Devon says:

since when do we give a s**t about polar bears? just because they might become endangered? what have any of you ever done to protect animals? what the f*** are you arguing for? its not like you plan on doing anything, you just act how youre told, f***ing tools. f*** anything that cant evolve to survive its changing environment

        • Tjanssen411 says:

ecept the CO2 levels are following Temp levels… if they were causing higher temps shouldn’t they be leading?

    • DarkFlounder says:

It hasn’t been getting warmer for over ten years. In fact, it’s gotten colder, enough to erase all the temperature gains from the past century.

      • Robert says:

First of all, you haven’t got a clue, secondly, Show me your references for that comment? I’m talking actual scholarly references from reputable sources. Or at least from NOAA or NASA.
        See Below:

        http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2010/01/2009-temperatures-by-jim-hansen/

By the way, if its getting colder, why was the 2000s the warmest decade on record, and likely the warmest in the last 2000 years?

Take an intro to climatology course and educate yourself… I know that’s not something which most skeptics do, but be brave and learn a few facts.

        • Chris says:

OMG, do you watch anything but propaganda?

The hockey stick graph is a fraudulent piece of work.

It has has been much warmer in the past 2000 years, even your holy man, Phil Jones, has admitted there has not been any ‘statistically significant’ temperature increases since 1995. And it was his ‘work’ that was used to make the hockey stick graph.

The house of cards that MMGW is based on is falling apart faster than that ice is melting under the polar bear.

The only deniers here are those who still insist the fraud is real.

          • Brian says:

You really need to look at some real science – try this: http://www.skepticalscience.com/empirical-evidence-for-global-warming.htm
it lays out the skeptics arguments and knocks each one of them down. Some of the interchange gets technical, so follow as much as you can. That is, if you really want to know what the science really shows. If you want to believe the blarney of the industry puppets and conspiracy theorists who tell you it’s all a hoax, then don’t read the science.

            • me says:

In many southern states, it has snowed for the first time in about 10 years. The last time Louisiana had so much snow was in the 1920′s or 40′s (Can’t recall). Granted, snow fall is slightly random, relying on precipitaion at the correct time.

        • Foxfier says:

          …Realclimate.org? Seriously?

The same guys who refused to take a leaker’s evidence on folks cooking the books?

Golly, why don’t you just use a press release from the KKK to show that they’re not biased?

  10. AJ says:

According to new research, global warming could render polar bears and reindeer extinct before the end of the century.

    Not really that funny anyway.

  11. KB says:

This has nothing to do with global warming.
Just like with humans. Some polar bears might simply be stupid and here we have one of those.

  12. dazed says:

Polar bears swim for miles easily.

  13. Last Firstborn says:

Global Warming is a hoax created to extort money out of us poor, ignorant, lesser humans.

The polar bear population is fine, the ice is not melting.

  14. Matt says:

Can’t believe people are still falling for the whole concept of Global Warming. But, these are the same people who voted BO into office. You tell them the world will end by alien invasion, and to send money…you better believe that someone will make billions of dollars.

  15. Todd says:

AJ, he doesn’t need a link. Do you actually pay attention to current events? AGW has been proven as a fabrication of junk selective science. Numbers were faked, data that didn’t support scientist’s point of view was ignored and they tried to hide it all. If you haven’t seen this in the news, you aren’t paying attention.

Scientists don’t destroy their data after coming up with their numbers. Well, they do if they know it won’t stand up to scrutiny.

So, excuse me while I laugh at your lack of knowledge.

The only people still believing in AGW are those that just can’t get enough of their own self-loathing guilt-trip.

  16. the environmentalist says:

hey Dazed? u too dazed to give us a scientific link?

  17. Catherine says:

    It’s so sad

  18. MaiName says:

CO2 produced by humans might not cause global warming, but it certainly doesn’t help.

  19. Here is John Coleman, The founder of the weather channel !!!!!!!! The original climatologist he has been in the biz for 50 years..

Telling you that global warming is a bunch of crap.

He couldn’t say this stuff in public until he retired.

    http://www.kusi.com/home/78477082.html?video=pop&t=a

watch the video and learn the truth.

Oh he took more than just intro to climatology

  20. Chunch BoneMeal says:

Stogie, you’re going to have to try harder than that.

    1) Just because science has never had any large conspiracies doesn’t mean it never will. This could be the first. (As much as we may like to believe science will never have any large conspiracies, there’s always a chance…),

    and

    2) “It’s a government conspiracy, dude” is not an argument. You need something to back that up. And so we’re clear, “that’s what large companies always do” isn’t enough to support that claim.

  21. confused says:

Polar bears don’t live on desolate chunks of ice! They use them for hunting seals. Think about it. There is nothing to eat on a big ice cube.

  22. Philly says:

How do you know it’s not corporations coming up with global warming? All the companies that build solar panels and windmills are corporations as well. Let’s all blame corporations for everything, that’s never been done before!

  23. tbear says:

jeezy peazy…can’t any of you people just agree it is a funny picture? That is why I look at these, just to laugh. Not to argue and name call.

    • timbenzedrine says:

      BINGO my fine tbear!!!!!!!
I laughed heartily and happily at the picture and caption!!!
Guess what? You can believe in Nuking the Whales for Jesus if you want to – it’s not even an eyeblink in the planet’s lifespan.
Like Mick Dundee once said in the movie “Crocodile Dundee”…..
“It’s like two fleas arguing over who owns the dog”
All these petty little diatribes and righteously indignant tirades don’t count a dingo’s kidneys toward the earth’s fate. LAUGH A LITTLE!!

      • Chris says:

Oh, I laughed heartily, but I also knew some one was going to bring up the fraud…

It just comes from experience in dealing with the fraud deniers…

  24. keith says:

Global warming is a corporate led belief. Just look at the money that will be flowing through the carbon trading system, billions upon billions of it. It will be the biggest money spinner to top all money spinners if it really gets going…

The days of global warming being just something in the minds of academics and the greens have long gone and its now led by big business and decidedly ‘ungreen’ motives.

Have you stopped to think why we have to literally rewire everything to fix what we have done? In the past when we have done something wrong by the climate we have been able to apply very specific ‘fixes’ to deal with the problem (CFC’s, Acid Rain, car emissions, etc) – now global warming comes and essentially 99.99% of the whole economic system needs to be fed through the carbon trading system – HELLO – we have a right to demand that the science be correct for such a dramatic change.

Also regarding the conspiracy angle, I don’t think there has been a fully organized attempt to deceive – but rather a science that was previously considered rather a ‘minor player’ against all the other sciences suddenly found itself thrown center stage with a mic to the world… Therefore all the procedures and practices that were probably acceptable originally, when you didn’t really matter that much, have now been found to be absolutely lacking in relation to the import of the conclusions being drawn.

For instance, the CRU simultaneously gathered, collated, adjusted and distributed climatic data to other researchers whilst also doing their own dependent research – now that may have been acceptable in the ‘minor player’ days – but now such wearing of multiple hats can be rather dangerous.

The likes of climateaudit and associated blogs should be seen as a result of this sudden rise to fame; it was almost inevitable in this day and age of readily available computing power that anybody with the right mathematical background could rerun and validate data based research and associated models. People forget the computer I write this on is very close to the power of a ten year old Cray supercomputer, and how long has climatic modeling being going on…

  25. Kayak Helmets and global warming don’t go together.

  26. cgray says:

Number 1-polar bears have been seen swimming in the open ocean 150 miles from land(their fat helps them float). Number 2-I’ll take global warming seriously as soon as Al Gore does in his personal life. Number 3-it never ceases to amaze me how gullible sophisticated liberals are for the latest fad.

  27. ekt8750 says:

You do know that the atmosphere is made up of air, which a gas right?

    • ignorance isn't bliss forever says:

You’re implying that all gases are harmless? you’re kidding, right?

it doesnt MATTER if global warming is real or not! It is, but if you could argue with deniers logically, there would be no deniers..but anyway, global warming or not, shoving pollutants and toxins into the air at an exorbitant rate is a ‘bad thing’ which we should stop doing.

  28. sad says:

this makes me soo sad :( i feel sooo guilty. im sry to all u poor polarbears. :( :( :( :( :(

  29. LynxLover_42 says:

i love how this turned into a political debate, all from a picture meant for entertainment. Take a gazillion chill pillz. and before you start, i am an environmentalist and i do believe in global warming.

  30. lolcomment says:

isnt it ironic that the bit of ice the polar bears on is the shape of a nuke exploding

  31. lolcomment says:

    tool.

  32. lolcomment says:

couldnt have put it better myself

  33. Cali Fett says:

Ok, since you all want to stop global warming, which is supposedly caused by green house gases such as CO2, then I know how you can help. It’s simple, you breath in oxygen right? And through cellular respiration you turn that into energy and CO2. So you are creating CO2, you are helping kill the Polar Bears. So, kill yourselves! Simple as that! No more dead Polar Bears and melted ice.

  34. Blooddraken says:

    Polar Bears can swim.
Polar Bear is not far from shore.
Picture was taken during the summer when even polar ice melts.

  35. Michel says:

This seriously brought tears to my eyes.

  36. Alejandro says:

wow people must have no life if this site turned to a political debate…im just gonna post the following: QQQQQQ POOR POLAR BEAR HES GONNA DIE

  37. Cor-Dem says:

Its kind of sad that some people think this picture is real. I mean, really?
How would they even get a shot? If theres someone with a f***ing camera why dont they save the polar bear instead of getting touching footage of it? And whats with this ice being wider at the top? When does ice form like that? Someone fabricated this picture to look as touching as possible.

    • Enigmatick says:

Actually, that is a realistic ice formation. Water and wave action at the surface tends to cause the ice to melt a little faster, while the ice in deeper water remains frozen, and the ice higher up tends to remain dry and not melt as fast.

I lived on the shore of Hudson Bay for 20 years, and I’ve seen that kind of ice formation all the time.

BTW, if I recall correctly, didn’t it turn out that this picture was taken in AUGUST?

  38. Hoyvay says:

Ha ha. One day future generations will look back at global warming the same way we look at people thinking the sun revolves around the earth, the earth is flat, and the human body only has 4 organs called the humors. STUPID!

  39. goingtocollegeforthiss**t says:

    http://www.ipcc.ch/

Take a look at the AR4 report.

    Have fun boys and girls!

  40. Jenn says:

Being in Alaska, they’re doing alright…not to say that climate isn’t affecting the Arctic, permafrost IS melting…but it’s not as drastic as a picture like this makes people think. He’s just sunning himself…

  41. cletus says:

Maybe its just me…but I think…maybe…POLAR BEARS CAN SWIM. If this one can’t, he is a dumbass and deserves to die

  42. Garrth says:

Makes me sad, when I see people call “global warming deniers” stupid. I’m not saying there is no global warming cause Earth is getting hotter. but if u look on some facts. it has been hotter before and the polar bears still live. and also there is no link between CO2 and the temperature of Earth.

  43. Nathan says:

anyone else notice that it’s a photoshopped sloth?

  44. Tjanssen411 says:

Odd thing… few years back the Left tried to cite Hurricane volume as ‘evidence of Global Warming (sorry climate change — all those Global Cooling articles in the 70′s and fluctuating temps kind of inconvenient for calling it Warming)… this was back when Katrina hit in August 2005

now in 2010, we’re coming up on the 5th anniversary of the Tragedy, but funny thing… this year we’re only up to Danielle — for those of you who don’t know, the names go up the alphabet, storm 1= A Name, 2= B 3= C, D=4 etc

thus Katrina @ 11 = More than Danielle @4 — if Global Warming er Climate Change means more Hurricanes, shouldn’t that equation be different?

    • Letstry says:

Actual science begs to differ : human-caused global warming is a current trend well supported by facts. This is acknowledged by the overwhelming majority of scientists studying climate. Overwhelming as in >95%.

2-The rest of the world don’t give a f**k about your ”right / Republicans this”, ”left / Liberals that”. Stop making everything about yourself.

The majority of 70′s climate predictions were about warming by the way. But whatever, you’re from USA, so relevant facts are likely to be optional in your country. Keep on cherry-picking irrelevent, out of context or fake data.

And… oh boy, I think I just got trolled.

      • Foxfier says:

        …are you that ignorant? Really?

The “scientists” in Great Britain are the ones caught cooking the books to get evidence for global warming. Same ones that destroyed their source data, rather than behaving like scientists and releasing it for verification.

By the way, Tjanssen411 is correct– there WERE a lot of global cooling articles in the 70s.
The supposed debunking of that “myth” offered by the ‘real climate’ propaganda folks shifts it over to published papers, a selection of which were looked at, and runs from the mid-60s to the end of the 70s.

for the uneducated-liberal-treehugging masses, natural climate change is nothing new.but in the grand scheme of things, who really gives a f**k the polar bears are drowning? species come and go, come to terms with it.
