  3. Derenil says:

What the hell is that thing!?

  4. bendy660 says:

where is the compensation and what is literally over it?

    • cray74 says:

It’s overcompensation for the weenie neighbors who live beside a military base but threaten lawsuits over artillery noise: the ultimate silencer.

    • ohlala says:

      Sarcastic bendy660

    • Red says:

They are over compensating for the high volume explosion that comes from a tanks main gun. That is a tank silencer.

Failblog, the fail that keeps on failing….

      • SFCRetired says:

Not a tank. That’s a 105mm howitzer. Don’t know what the other device is.

        • Damage says:

He was part right, its an artillery silencer, they don’t really use them, since they are not very mobile, and one thing modern artillery needs to be is mobile as all hell.

          • CaptJosh says:

Especially with Firefinder radar. Once the enemy tracks the origin of artillery fire, they’ll engage in counter-battery fire. If your artillery can’t move away from where it fires its first salvo, it’s toast.

          • 42 says:

The picture shows a prototype developed by the German military. It was used for the M109, but scrapped in the meantime.

          • jklinders says:

Of secondary concern is concealment. There is no hiding that monstrosity. Still in testing maybe?

            • Strangeknight says:

actually, it’s used on the range when in close proximity to civilian populations, such as in Germany, where you don’t have much space to get away from people and still have enough of a buffer to ‘shoot’. This silencer reduces the sound enough that you don’t end up plastering the hair of the little old lady next door on the ceiling every time you go to the range.

The camo on the thing only makes sense to the military, which somehow thinks you can hide that thing, especially with a white support structure…..

          • Gunner says:

            Its a 155mm Howitzer

        • RUdumb says:

          Clearly a tank.

        • JediGoalie30 says:

Actually, that is an M109-series (probably an A5) 155mm self propelled howitzer. 105′s are much smaller, and I don’t think that anyone bothers putting tracks on them. The whole point of 105′s is for light, airborne, and air assault units who need to have guns that are light enough to be towed by HMMWV’s, slung under helicopters, or dropped by parachute.

          • Ahetma Vaakenjaab says:

Thank you for the explanation and most of all, thank you for your service! Airborne ROCKS!!

          • BigBenny says:

Actually the Americans did: SP M108 is a 105mm tracked self propelled howitzer (http://www.battletanks.com/m108_sp_gun.htm).

In the 1960s 105 mm was considered the norm for artillery. 155mm was for divisional artillery and counter-battery fire and/or nuclear fire.

            • JediGoalie30 says:

I’ll give you that one (never knew we did that), but it didn’t seem to take them long to realize that a 20-ton tracked chassis was overkill for something as small as a 105 and they converted that same platform to the M109 that we all know and love today. :)

Although, I have to admit, if they would have kept that around and upgraded it to the electronics and fire-control systems of the A6 “Paladin” system, it would have made my jobs as PL and FDO a lot easier…

          • willis says:

            Gun bunny :)

            Thanks for your service.

          • DoubtMe says:

It is also the Marines primary arty piece, its easy to move like you said, and you can fill a 5/7 ton with lots of ammo. Plus it is the only widely used piece that I know of that can be moved quickly with man power alone.

          • Sthom1968 says:

Afaik US armoured units use their own camo patterns, not those of other countries, and going by the SPG’s camo scheme (similar to the Flecktarn pattern used for their combat uniforms) it’s German. Specifically it appears to be a Panzerhaubitze 2000, mounting a 155mm gun. Believe me, they take some silencing; where I live in Warminster we’re about 10-11 miles from Royal Artillery Depot Larkhill and we can clearly hear them on firing practice.

        • Boomer says:

          155mm howitzer, actually.

        • artyvet says:

close but no cigar, it’s a 155mm palidan, but yes the gun is a howitzer… and to be honest i’ve never seen the silencer thing ever used…

        • willis says:

you mean 155mm. it looks like a m109 Paladin.

        • Mortal Wombat says:

Actually it’s a 155mm Howitzer, the M109 Paladin in german service. The picture has to be few years old, as today they aren’t used by the bundeswehr anymore, cause they are to old and they lack of precission compared to the new Panzerhaubitze 2000.

I need that Gun to kill ZOMBIES!!

  6. happylady says:

Is there really a need for camoflauge people! I’m sure no one will EVER notice now.

  7. Azrael says:

    Actually just a cannon silencer.

  8. Emissary says:

    Is the Camo really necessary…

  9. not_me says:

yeah, great, a tank silencer. now the enemy won’t notice you by the noise of the shot, they will see you over miles before…

    • good says:

No they won’t. The earth is round which limits the range one can see. The range of a 155 is much longer then Line Of Sight. The camo pattern is to make airborne/satalite observation and evaluation more difficult.

  10. JOEYSS says:

the silencer looks like a giant penis

  11. Hmmm. says:

I just thought the fail was because the cannon looked like a penis.
    Eh well.

  18. logan says:

  19. Lusminos says:

This is just for the Martians and their damn flying saucers.

  20. nu4g says:

This particular photo has been floating around the interwebz since since 2003-2004, maybe earlier. The photo was taken at the range at Meppen Germany and the silencing device was made by Rheinmetall GmBh. They make similar noise abatement devices for firing ranges.
