Hi there. Have you moved in next to an artillery firing range? Having problems sleeping, or concentrating because of the noise? Well… Duh! What the hell did you expect? (seriously people are so retarded.)
He was part right, its an artillery silencer, they don’t really use them, since they are not very mobile, and one thing modern artillery needs to be is mobile as all hell.
Especially with Firefinder radar. Once the enemy tracks the origin of artillery fire, they’ll engage in counter-battery fire. If your artillery can’t move away from where it fires its first salvo, it’s toast.
actually, it’s used on the range when in close proximity to civilian populations, such as in Germany, where you don’t have much space to get away from people and still have enough of a buffer to ‘shoot’. This silencer reduces the sound enough that you don’t end up plastering the hair of the little old lady next door on the ceiling every time you go to the range.
The camo on the thing only makes sense to the military, which somehow thinks you can hide that thing, especially with a white support structure…..
Actually, that is an M109-series (probably an A5) 155mm self propelled howitzer. 105′s are much smaller, and I don’t think that anyone bothers putting tracks on them. The whole point of 105′s is for light, airborne, and air assault units who need to have guns that are light enough to be towed by HMMWV’s, slung under helicopters, or dropped by parachute.
-Former artillery platoon leader in the 101st Airborne Division
I’ll give you that one (never knew we did that), but it didn’t seem to take them long to realize that a 20-ton tracked chassis was overkill for something as small as a 105 and they converted that same platform to the M109 that we all know and love today.
Although, I have to admit, if they would have kept that around and upgraded it to the electronics and fire-control systems of the A6 “Paladin” system, it would have made my jobs as PL and FDO a lot easier…
It is also the Marines primary arty piece, its easy to move like you said, and you can fill a 5/7 ton with lots of ammo. Plus it is the only widely used piece that I know of that can be moved quickly with man power alone.
Afaik US armoured units use their own camo patterns, not those of other countries, and going by the SPG’s camo scheme (similar to the Flecktarn pattern used for their combat uniforms) it’s German. Specifically it appears to be a Panzerhaubitze 2000, mounting a 155mm gun. Believe me, they take some silencing; where I live in Warminster we’re about 10-11 miles from Royal Artillery Depot Larkhill and we can clearly hear them on firing practice.
Actually it’s a 155mm Howitzer, the M109 Paladin in german service. The picture has to be few years old, as today they aren’t used by the bundeswehr anymore, cause they are to old and they lack of precission compared to the new Panzerhaubitze 2000.
Given the fact how some countries are censorship obsene symbols and pictures perhaps such a thing will be automatically deleted from the observation fotos.
No they won’t. The earth is round which limits the range one can see. The range of a 155 is much longer then Line Of Sight. The camo pattern is to make airborne/satalite observation and evaluation more difficult.
Apparently you don’t know much about the art of camouflage, and haven’t followed “Historic LOL’s” on the Chezburger network to see how the US camouflaged entire airplane factories during WWII.
This particular photo has been floating around the interwebz since since 2003-2004, maybe earlier. The photo was taken at the range at Meppen Germany and the silencing device was made by Rheinmetall GmBh. They make similar noise abatement devices for firing ranges.

East Asian Military lol.
German Army
Fort Dix?
Not only that… but why would the whole of “East Asia” have one army?
Because Oceania has always been at war with East Asia, Eurasia is our ally.
omg was that an ace combat remark nice i thought u wer going for front mission
Ever heard of 1984? Maybe George Orwell?
Ace Combat? Front Mission? **facepalms**
I think he thought the guy had said ‘Osea’ and ‘Erusea.’
because east asians on internationaly known for there small penis, child molestation and hermaphrodites!
Penetrating deep behind enemy lines
That’s why it’s formed like a penis.
*Facepalm.* literally.
Thank you, Captain Obvious, but the joke is in another comment.
What the hell is that thing!?
It’s test fire chamber. The mobile artillery piece there fires directly into the chamber, and the chamber absorbs the impact of the shell.
Why it’s painted in camouflage, I don’t know.
Its a silencer that military base has houses near by and people where complaining so they use that giant metal thing to absorb the sound
win
Really, that comment is a win? Are you s**tting me. I am so disappointed right now.
Son. I am Di- f**k this s**t. I’m not even gonna go there. you don’t deserve a meme comment.
you are hereby banned from saying win.

are you retarded?
Appearantly it’s a silencer test, never went into production.

When I was in the army we painted everything camo.
It’s a-firin’ its lazor.
where is the compensation and what is literally over it?
It’s overcompensation for the weenie neighbors who live beside a military base but threaten lawsuits over artillery noise: the ultimate silencer.
Sarcastic bendy660
They are over compensating for the high volume explosion that comes from a tanks main gun. That is a tank silencer.
Failblog, the fail that keeps on failing….
Not a tank. That’s a 105mm howitzer. Don’t know what the other device is.
He was part right, its an artillery silencer, they don’t really use them, since they are not very mobile, and one thing modern artillery needs to be is mobile as all hell.

The picture shows a prototype developed by the German military. It was used for the M109, but scrapped in the meantime.
Of secondary concern is concealment. There is no hiding that monstrosity. Still in testing maybe?

There we go, I was hoping someone would be able to show a purpose to that thing. Thanks.
Its a 155mm Howitzer
Clearly a tank.
Clearly, not a tank. Tanks have turrets. Also, what everyone else said.
The howitzer in the picture has a turret as wel…
It is a 155mm Howitzer. Offered with respect.

Thank you for the explanation and most of all, thank you for your service! Airborne ROCKS!!
damn right it does
Actually the Americans did: SP M108 is a 105mm tracked self propelled howitzer (http://www.battletanks.com/m108_sp_gun.htm).
In the 1960s 105 mm was considered the norm for artillery. 155mm was for divisional artillery and counter-battery fire and/or nuclear fire.
I’ll give you that one (never knew we did that), but it didn’t seem to take them long to realize that a 20-ton tracked chassis was overkill for something as small as a 105 and they converted that same platform to the M109 that we all know and love today.

Gun bunny
Thanks for your service.

101st? I sive right on Ft Campbell! Small world.
101st? I live right on Fort Campbell! Small world.
155mm howitzer, actually.
close but no cigar, it’s a 155mm palidan, but yes the gun is a howitzer… and to be honest i’ve never seen the silencer thing ever used…
Fired a lot of them at Fort Sill, and never seen one of them attached.
well, think about it…. with a silencer that big, do you really think it’s easy to attach and remove?!??
you mean 155mm. it looks like a m109 Paladin.
Actually it’s a 155mm Howitzer, the M109 Paladin in german service. The picture has to be few years old, as today they aren’t used by the bundeswehr anymore, cause they are to old and they lack of precission compared to the new Panzerhaubitze 2000.
..I WANT ONE!!
I need that Gun to kill ZOMBIES!!
thats not a gun…
..it’s a Space station!
And I shall call it “Mini Mir”
It is. A very big one, with an even bigger silencer on it.
Is there really a need for camoflauge people! I’m sure no one will EVER notice now.
Do you really think that thing would be prettier in pink?
Ironically Pink is a good colour for Desert camouflage, which is why the SAS painted their Land Rovers pink during the Second World War.
Actually just a cannon silencer.
Is the Camo really necessary…
It’d defeat the purpose of making artillery stealthy if you could SEE the giant, immobile silencer. Hence, camo.
Given the fact how some countries are censorship obsene symbols and pictures perhaps such a thing will be automatically deleted from the observation fotos.
ironic..
yeah, great, a tank silencer. now the enemy won’t notice you by the noise of the shot, they will see you over miles before…
No they won’t. The earth is round which limits the range one can see. The range of a 155 is much longer then Line Of Sight. The camo pattern is to make airborne/satalite observation and evaluation more difficult.
the silencer looks like a giant penis
thats the point of it…
“Ohh, I c wat u did there…”
I just thought the fail was because the cannon looked like a penis.
Eh well.
Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon
GINTAMA!!!!!!!
Hey, it’s really perfect!
IMA FIREN MAH LAZUR!!!
WOAH. this is sadly disturbing…
Dat a silencer? Sneaky…
WHAT’S THE POINT OF PAINTING SOMETHING THAT BIG CAMOUFLAGE!? Good to see taxpayer money going to good use.
Apparently you don’t know much about the art of camouflage, and haven’t followed “Historic LOL’s” on the Chezburger network to see how the US camouflaged entire airplane factories during WWII.
I can assure you, that you never payed taxes for that, since that picture was taken in Germany.
OH S**T! I paid taxes for that D :
ROFL
haha, now they won’t know where we shot from! hehehe, oh wait.
its a silencerLOL
This is just for the Martians and their damn flying saucers.

Yes, because that will blend in nicely.
