The longer you live, the more you travel, the more people you know, and the most importantly, the more you read – the more idioms you will learn. Whether or not you have heard a particular idiom does not make you dumb, and it certainly does not make you smart. If smart people were incapable of hearing/seeing stupid things I would not be able to see most of this website.
Well, I’m from England, and everybody’s familiar with that phrase. We also say “Does the Pope s**t in the woods?” or “Is a bear Catholic?” for humour’s sake, combining the above phrase with a similarly popular one, “Is the Pope Catholic?”.
Maybe it’s a British phrase? But we don’t get too many wild bears ’round these parts… Or wild Popes. lol
I think it’s supposed to be “s**t happens” “yes yes it does” because a bear is not an it. it’s a he or a she and most people would say “yes yes they do” if they were trying to respond to “does a bear s**t in the woods?”
The old saying “Does a bear s**t in the woods?” Unfortunately, though the bear does indeed to be s**tting, this really appears to be someone’s backyard more than the woods.
However, if your first language isn’t English, which is the case for more of us than you seem to realize, it may very well be a saying you haven’t heard before, which holds for Anya and me.
Well, as I said above, I’ve heard the phrase but it wasn’t that obvious to me that the bear was in fact pooping. It just looks like it’s standing there. So it didn’t click right away.
It’s from an episode of south park when he’s asked to join an illegal KFC black-market and he replies does a bear crap in the woods and does the pope make the world safer for pedifiles
I’ve never heard that saying, and I agree with the fact that it’s not entirely all that easy to tell wtf that bear is doing. o.o; Don’t care to know anymore…
Use to the ‘if a tree falls and no one is around’ saying, the bear one is completely new to me though.
I’ve never heard that expression in my life, and I’m usually the person who uses obscure old-timey words and phrases (someone asked me if I made up “babycakes”). I’m definitely not living under a rock, English is my first language, and there are bears in my region, I’ve lived here my whole life, and I’ve still never heard anyone say that.
I like “Is the Space Pope reptilian?” better, in any case.
A quick google search comes up with it being used in the movies – The Big Chill, Band of Brothers, Without a Paddle, – on the TV shows SouthPark and Friends, – and in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. There may be a few regions where it’s not used commonly but it is by no means a rare or regional idiom.
I don’t get it
no, no you don’t.
the question “does a bear S*** in the woods?” Is a common saying (at least in the US)… a rhetorical question often used in place of a “yes”.
Do they eat rice in China?
zing?
Thank you for explaining, I’ve never heard that expression before. Must just be a US thing.
omg i thought it was a canadian thing…my us friends dont know that one
Thanks, I didn’t get it, either. I’ve heard the expression, but it just wasn’t that obvious to me exactly what the bear was doing…
who the f**k says that in the US
No one. Absolutely no one.
You people who have never heard this expression are either under the age of 10 or f**king morons.
Because those who have never heard an idiotic term like that are totally the morons.
The longer you live, the more you travel, the more people you know, and the most importantly, the more you read – the more idioms you will learn. Whether or not you have heard a particular idiom does not make you dumb, and it certainly does not make you smart. Uh yeah. I’m 32 years old, live in the US, and have never heard of this either. Must be regional.
Well, I’m from England, and everybody’s familiar with that phrase. We also say “Does the Pope s**t in the woods?” or “Is a bear Catholic?” for humour’s sake, combining the above phrase with a similarly popular one, “Is the Pope Catholic?”.

Uhh, no it’s not. I’m British, 24 and have never heard this. Just MSN’d a couple of my mates and neither have they.
Do we? First I’ve heard of it.
A wild pope appears!
Pope uses chastise. It’s not very effective.
I think it’s supposed to be “s**t happens” “yes yes it does” because a bear is not an it. it’s a he or a she and most people would say “yes yes they do” if they were trying to respond to “does a bear s**t in the woods?”
Took me a second, but nice.
I can’t help but think that this picture is answering the question:
if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
No, it’s the answer to the sound of one hand clapping.
What’s the sound of one hand clapping a bear poo?
splat!
I can do that! Either snap, or move all of your fingers to your palm quickly. It makes a funny sound!
My monitor is barely working, so it almost looks like this is a reply to the post right above it. Pretend it is, and enjoy.
You’re right: http://bobshouseofvideogames.com/2010/10/14/funny-video-game-videos-tf2-philosophizing/
If a bear s**ts in the woods and no-one is around to see it, does it really happen?
Yes. People step in it.
if a tree falls down and only a woman is around to hear it,
how the hell did a tree get in the kitchen.
…I got to admit, that made me laugh even though the sexism is annoying.
now would you like to see the pope’s privy in the Vatican?
does the pope s**t on a bear in the woods?
Is the bear an altar boy?
south park reference ftw
what the f**k?
Am I missing something?
The old saying “Does a bear s**t in the woods?” Unfortunately, though the bear does indeed to be s**tting, this really appears to be someone’s backyard more than the woods.
No wonder this made no sense to me. Never heard that saying before in my life. The captioner could’ve made this a tad more universal.
+1.
Never head that said either.
Seeing “YES” in capital letters like that, the best I could do was to rack my brains to recall prog-rock album covers.
im pretty confused too….
That’s what I was thinking.
TikTok: > Am I missing something?
Yes, a brain.
That comment must have been so incredibly hard to come up with.
Maybe this is a short way of saying “Your argument has been rendered invalid”
Is it really that hard to get? I mean, it took me a second, but this isn’t the Da Vinci Code.
Agreed. o_o
However, if your first language isn’t English, which is the case for more of us than you seem to realize, it may very well be a saying you haven’t heard before, which holds for Anya and me.
Wonder if the people that didn’t get this have been living under a rock (or know what the expression means).
Took me a second as well, but still great.
Seriously, this is one of the few creative ones on here.
It’s pretty hard to get if you have never heard the phrase ‘Does a bear s**t in the woods?’.
Not everyone in the world knows the same phrases.
well… most of us have never heared of that saying so yeah it is kindoff hard to get…
the da vinci code was obvious though
Actually, what the bear is dropping IS the Da Vinci Code.
Well, as I said above, I’ve heard the phrase but it wasn’t that obvious to me that the bear was in fact pooping. It just looks like it’s standing there. So it didn’t click right away.
Nope. Don’t get it either…
Not all of them do, polar bears don’t
ALL ANIMALS POOP.
no woods in the artic -______-
I thought it was done perfectly.
It’s from an episode of south park when he’s asked to join an illegal KFC black-market and he replies does a bear crap in the woods and does the pope make the world safer for pedifiles
it was used in south park, but it’s not from south park
You’re an idiot. Epic fail.
Should I facepalm now or…?
I think this is funnier to those who can get it without an explanation than if it were to hint around to help a broader audience understand.
bears are cool
This made me laugh. xD
Does the Pope s**t in the woods?
Is the bear Catholic?
Charmine ultra!
i cant help but think this is full of win!
if someone has seen Band of Brothers is remembering George Luz right now
Sure, the bear does appear to be sitting in the woods, don’t know why you are censoring it though… ;>
LoL… this is great! …classic
This must be some cryptic message.
do bears s**t in the woods?
Does a bear s**t in the woods? Yes, yes it does.
well, in other languages this saying doesn’t exist. so yea, it really is hard to get for many.
BUT, does it use a rabbit to wipe its ass?????
It took me a minute but i got the joke eventually
Seriously?
It took me like 1 second, and english is not even my first language…
Laughed my ass of, btw
S**t is so cash!
Does the Pope s**t in the woods?
Jokes should not be voted down because people don’t get them, they should be voted down if you get them and THEN you don’t think it’s funny.
Exactly. If no one gets it, it should get no votes either way.
I did not realize that that saying was so obscure…
I still laughed. Sorry that so many people are confused, but I can’t make myself feel bad (as I’m usually in the group that doesn’t get the joke).
Best…. poster…. ever!!!!!
How do so many people not know what this means……
haha south park
but is the Pope a Catholic
this went straight to my facebook page. classic. best laugh I had all week
Is the Space Pope reptilian?
Nice, 358 people that have no idea what this means. *facepalm*
I’ve never heard that saying, and I agree with the fact that it’s not entirely all that easy to tell wtf that bear is doing. o.o; Don’t care to know anymore…
Use to the ‘if a tree falls and no one is around’ saying, the bear one is completely new to me though.
Jeez people, I’m Australian and I’ve heard that expression!

To everyone saying this is obscure…

My Mom uses that saying on occasion.
