if i recall correctly, the 80GB launch model phat ps3 could play PS2 discs.
and i read something a while ago about a USB device sony is working on to handle ps2 disc support.
The original version of the PS3, the 40 gig one, could play PS2. Mine does. The newer 80 gig cant because to make room for the extra 40 gigs they took out the PS2 disc reader. Which was retarded of them.
The first series that came with a 20gigs HDD were able to play some PS2 games – out of the few hundreds that came out (and some are still coming out), it was only able to emulate a tenth. Also, their hard-drives are overpriced since you can buy any computer hard-drive and put it in instead of the default ones.
Later models however cannot emulate PS2 games, which means that if you bought your PS3 after the first six months it was out, you’re screwed.
I heard that the latest models (most probably only the slim) were able to emulate SOME games. And I emphasize that some because it’s even less than the original emulation.
Question: why does the HDD size changes the ability to emulate PS2 games?
the 60GB fat [launch] systems play all PSone and PS2 software. You whiners chose quantity [Hard Drive space] over quality [backwards compatibility] and Sony bagged the compatibility technology to cut costs.
only games out of my whole xbox library that i could play on my 360 without having to download an emulator from Live were Halo and Halo 2, everything else needed the emulator patch. meanwhile, my ps2 is still alive and kicking though i do like being able to still play PS1 discs on a PS3 (and on the PS2 as well)
The reason I stuck with the Xbox is because it had the games that I liked. Basically Halo, Mercs POD, SW Battlefront, and Fusion Frenzy. That basically made up my whole game library.
Not the 360 S, which is the only one available now. Even the older 360 didn’t have full backwards compatibility while the fat PS3 had nearly full PS2 compatibility (only games I ever have a problem with are a couple of obscure JRPGs and a few PS1 games).
Stop talking out of yer arse, there is a list of a 100 something BC games on xbox.com and they all just play fine on the slim. I’m playing one right now.
True Sean… true… except MS told you this upfront while Sony tried to use backwards compatiblity as one of the justifications for charging $600 for a console that was fully backwards compatible. Then people complained about price and which feature did they remove to lower costs?
Yeah.
The 360 slim has the same backwards compatibility support as any other 360. As before, you need an HDD so the old arcade and the new 4GB model won’t work with xbox games unless you add a drive.
I thought it was on less of a technical level than the GameCube, because I actually still have fun on the GameCube…
Only good Wii game imo is GoldenEye. Using a GameCube or Classic Controller, not Wiimote.
Lets see; Brawl, Mario Kart, New Super mario bros, The entire Wii retro game store where you can play the origional Legend of Zelda, LOZ- The Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime 3, Truama Center, and Resident Evil 4 (though that is a port).
Now See a pattern here? Most of the games I said were Nintendo games because most 3rd party games rely on motion controls to do some stupid s__t. The Wii doesn’t suck, just the crappy 3rd party motion games.
And that’s a bad thing? Wii is the closest thing you’ll come to old fun games that didn’t give a s**t about graphics and just focused on gameplay. I’d rather have that than a flashy, yet very unsatisfying XBox.
Exactly, the Wii, is for TRUE gamers. Like Legend of Zelda IMO is the best and one of the most famous series ever made. I have a PS3 and Wii. I would get an Xbox but im not paying for Xbox Gold or annual internet.
The Wii is still selling more than the PS3 or the 360. Do ya know why? Because it doesn’t just focus on hardcore gamers. It has a broad range of games for everyone. A great example of a game for both casual players and the more hardcore gamers is Donkey Kong Country Returns. The levels have a nice difficulty curve and thanks to there not being any game over even a casual player can just continue on after a bit of practice.
I don’t see why you’re hating on the Wii. Is it because you’re too “grown up” to play games with more cartoony characters such as Mario, DK, and Kirby? Is it because the graphics aren’t on par with the 360 or PS3? Is it because your group of friends has pressured you into thinking the Wii isn’t any good because all they care for are the next FPS that’s the same as the last?
Whatever your reason is, why not just get over it and stick to your choice in gaming? The Wii is here and it’s still standing tall.
PS1 had CDs, not DVDs, if memory serves (I gave mine away to my nephew so I can’t check). My PS3 has full compatibility, and with the newer ones they are selling PS1 and 2 games on the network.
if by “gay” you mean “written by people who knew how to get the most out a little instead mistaking GPU eyecandy for gameplay then, yes PS2 (and PS1) games were most definitely “gay”.
Two words – Vice City. And a few others (War of the Monsters, for example). But, yeah, All the older games seem to be more for nostalgia, like the new atari setup that plays a bunch of the old games from the 80s. Although the new space invaders game was fun, if a bit bizarre.
The PS2 was the best console available for many years and for those that care more about gameplay than graphics and/or gimmicks, some of the games are actually pretty good and you could go as far to say better than some available on newer consoles
Had to buy a PS2 last week after my last one died as my PS3 will not play games like Bushido Blade 1 & 2 (OK so they were PS1 games but still great games in PvP mode), Ico and shadow of the colossus.

The original PS3 had full backwards compatibility because it included the PS2 chipset in the hardware. 2ng gen pulled the chip but still had built-in emulation. Models produced after August 2008 (e.g. slims) have removed the PS2 hardware and emulation, and have as such lost the PS2 game play compatibility.
I have read that you can download an Emulator from the PlayStation store which will allow you to play (some of) your PS2 games with a little trickery. I have also read that the slim can’t play PS2 period. I don’t have a PS3 right now (yet), so I wouldn’t know either way.
For the record, I do hold a negative opinion of such practice. I have VCD, I don’t want a DVD player that can’t play them, and I don’t want a Blue-Ray that can’t play my existing DVD collection; in the same way I don’t want a PS3 that can’t play existing PS2 games.
Umm the PS3 plays DVD’s perfectly, in fact it upscales them to 1080p (if you have a good enough TV, HDMI etc). It just doesn’t play PS2 games anymore. I got an original one though (upgraded the crappy 60gig HDD to a 640gig HDD too).
The problem of new PS3′s not playing PS2 games can be solved by keeping your old PS2 though.
Oh and BluRay is worth every cent just for the better sound quality than DVD. And these days BD movies are almost the same price as DVD’s. Picture quality is probably better but less noticeable. I have the full 1080p TV but unless I buy a BD and DVD copy of the same movie and play them side by side in PIP mode there’s no way I could really tell the difference in picture quality. However with a good enough sound system you’ll notice the enhanced sound quality straight away
360 fans need to work on new material. I guess losing exclusivity on games like Mass Effect 2 and companies like Epic (Bulletstorm in Feb) has the fanbois really grasping at whatever they can. I guess we go back to the old standard response of pointing out that the PS3 at least does not have a 55% console failure rate (source – Game Informer magazine).
I’ve had my 80GB console since 2007 — backwards compatible, built in wi-fi and blu-ray, no failures, and I didn’t blow $180 ($60/year for xbox live) just to play multiplayer like I do on my PS3 for free. As an added bonus, the PlayStation Network multiplayer isn’t filled with teabagging 12-year-olds constantly calling each other gay.
Whatever trolls. Take a win where you can get it. I’ll be enjoying innovative gaming in LittleBigPlanet 2, Journey, The Last Guardian, and 2011 Game of the Year Uncharted 3.
Yeah, because it’s the 360 fans that are butthurt because the PS3 lost a feature that made it even more awesome, not the people who have a huge PS2 collection and want to play their games in HD. Quit acting like the twelve year olds you so love whining about, not everything boils down to this “console war” crap.
or a virtual machine. i have one with dos 6.22 and 3.11 on, i have the floppy images for dos 6.22 and 3.11 on a CD image converted from the floppies. the PC can be more versatile that any console ever will
Mine can play PS2 games – or at least some of them. And some of the PS1 games. Of course, it can’t play some of the PS3 games, so I guess that evens out. Nor can it connect to PSN, because Sony think using a machine for what it was sold to do is an offense that requires punishment.
It only does everything. Except stop everyone crying like babies about the backwards compatibility! If you still wanted to play your PS2 games, then here’s an idea: KEEP YOU GOD DAMN PS2!
Mine dosn’t play PS2 games, but some models do!!!! I’ve just bought God Hand( a very awesome game by the way) and when i’ve insert the disc it says the he cant play the disc, it’s anoying!!!!
If you want to play PS2 games, just keep your PS2. If you didn’t have one, just use an emulator on PC or hope they remasterize it for PS3 like they did with GOW 1 and 2, Prince of Persia and Sly Trilogies. And Team ICO and Splinter Cell games soon. But yea, we are missing the point here. It’s the exaggerated publicity. I’m still waiting for the day my PS3 brings me my beer.
Oh, and Black Ops is a piece of s**t Activision can fart out in a year, throw to the blind teen gamers’ mouth and call it a masterpiece.
Emulators are cool, yes, but only if you have a top of the range PC. I have a GeForce 9400, 2GB RAM and 2.67GHz dual-core and it still struggles with most games at one point or another.
why do you losers argue about which console is better? All of your arguments can be boiled down to this
I cant afford both a ps3 and xbox so i’m gonna be automatically prejudiced against any [insert console] game even though both have fantastic exclusive games such as ratchet and clank, uncharted 2, halo reach and gears of war
mine plays ps2 and ps1 games. the original model is by far the best model. it may not have as much memory but i can still play all my older games plus it has 4 usb ports and all of the sd card slots
The Metal Gear Solid 4 edition does (80GB) (I got that one!) For all oddities that don’t play right, such as the Midway Arcade Treasures discs, I’ve got my old PS2 50xxx model right next to it. I just added a bigger hard drive to the PS3. 80GB just doesn’t cut it.
Ah, yes… Sony… falsely advertising everything since the launch of the PS3. Sad… they used to be a good company. They claim it does everything, but that’s not even possible for it to do everything. Atleast Nintendo (my favorite game company) doesn’t falsely advertise stuff. Hell, Microsoft doesn’t even falsely advertise stuff. I’m glad I own a Wii and a 360, and stayed as far away as possible from the PS3. I thought of getting one, at one point, but only to be able to play PS2 games (I never owned a PS2) but of course, the dumbasses removed the only redeeming feature of the damn system. Shame on you, Sony.
I can think of some other things it can’t do. Cure cancer, do my homework, play games made by Nintendo or Microsoft, create a wireless thing that doesn’t even REMOTELY look like a WII ripoff, etc.
The reason why I went to XBOX 360. Still have my PS2, so I guess there really was no loss in not being able to play my games…’specially since Square Enix supports games for Microsoft now.
All you have to do is download the backwards capability for free from the Playstation Store. That way if you don’t play PS2 games you don’t need to waste that space on your hard drive….
zing.
Mine can play ps2 games.
LOL!
mine does
f**k, really? what model?
if i recall correctly, the 80GB launch model phat ps3 could play PS2 discs.
and i read something a while ago about a USB device sony is working on to handle ps2 disc support.
acually a while ago there was a software update that made it so all models could play PS2 games.
This. The demotivational poster is fail.
I have a 40 gb model that cant play ps2 games
That one could not. The original one could. If you would like to know I posted the info down there v a bit.
80 GB wasn’t a launch model, but I believe it can play PS2 games. I know my LAUNCH 60 GB model can play PS2 games.
only the 60, 40, and 20 gb were backwards compatible unfortunately some 80 gbs can but not all mine can and i will never give it up
The original version of the PS3, the 40 gig one, could play PS2. Mine does. The newer 80 gig cant because to make room for the extra 40 gigs they took out the PS2 disc reader. Which was retarded of them.

Do you work for Geek Squad??
Is yours the model shown?
A slim? I think not.
Mine does too and it’s a slim
no, it doesnt
they all do, with the new-ish software update u download thru the Play Station store
No they don’t i have a ps3 and congradulations it does not play ps2 games that’s just sad.
It’s ‘congratulations’ smartass.
Really thats why i have a ps3 slim in front of me that plays duke nukem time to kill xD

the 60GB fat [launch] systems play all PSone and PS2 software. You whiners chose quantity [Hard Drive space] over quality [backwards compatibility] and Sony bagged the compatibility technology to cut costs.

just go to the playstaion store and add the free PS2 add-on, duh.

Funny, all the PS3 FAQs on their site says you can’t.
Except blowjobs.
it used to, but the reader would break down all the time… =P
The new 360 doesn’t have backwards compatibility now either. Of course the original Xbox library was s**te compared to the PS2 library, though.

Surprising how no one mentions how the new 360 doesn’t have backwards compatibility either.
What do you mean? Even the newest models do.
actually.. it does play a lot of the xbox games

my PS3 has full backwards compatibility and my 360 Elite does too XD
Not quite – try playing Chrono Cross on your PS3 or Deus Ex: Invisible War on your 360 (hint: you can’t).
I just finished Chrono Cross on my PS3, worked perfectly fine.
Stop talking out of yer arse, there is a list of a 100 something BC games on xbox.com and they all just play fine on the slim. I’m playing one right now.

The 360 doesn’t claim to do everything.
thats where ur wrong mine plays regular xbox games realy well like halo the first one also halo 2
Funny, I run a ton of xbox games on my 360, they work fine, not sure what your BSing about.
LOL mine still does. U jelly?
Well, not really, i have a PS2, so i dont need it. And I payed almost $300 less. R U JELLY???
^ This.
mmmmm jelly
REALLY?
Crap, I was about to replace my good ol’ faithfull ps2 for this but now I might go Xbox…
I was just thinking that too. Maybe I’ll go for a Wii instead.
no wiis suck giant donkey balls
I think you mean Donkey Kong Balls?
hey wii has better motion controlls and more fun on shooters with the gun attachment, just likeon black ops, its amazing
Yeah, I just got the new xbox Elite 360 and it’s great. A couple of xbox games work. I hardly play them, though.
Nnnnoooooo, that probably goes to the 360. It has shooting games and… what else? At least the PS3 and Wii have OTHER games to play.
But I’m not a console whore, so I don’t care.
Are you kidding? The Wiis my favorite console I have, and it’s microsoft fanboys like you that remind me why I hate Microsoft.
well maybe your a dumb ass for considering buying the worst video game console ever made in all of history.
Actually, Wii has the best backwards compatibility of all current generation consoles.
That might be because it’s still on the same technical level as the Gamecube…
I thought it was on less of a technical level than the GameCube, because I actually still have fun on the GameCube…
Only good Wii game imo is GoldenEye. Using a GameCube or Classic Controller, not Wiimote.
Lets see; Brawl, Mario Kart, New Super mario bros, The entire Wii retro game store where you can play the origional Legend of Zelda, LOZ- The Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime 3, Truama Center, and Resident Evil 4 (though that is a port).

lmao, you just contradicted yourself. Hard.
Nnnhhh..nnhhhh… insert fanboy hate here…. nnnnnhhh…nnnnnhhh… now where’s my milk bottle? have need to suckle…. nnnnnhh…
Yes. Yes. And yes. Couldn’t have said it better myself. :’D
“Insert console fanboyism here”
“Insert jelly here”
Funny…my PS3 is backwards compatible to both PS 1 and 2 games….without any problems..and I’ve had mine going on 3 yrs now….hmm
Apparently, the newer PS3′s don’t have backwards compatibility like the older ones did.
the original playstation doesnt play discs dumbass
Actually…PS1′s played discs. If it doesn’t then my DISCS for Driver and Driver 2 (for example) didn’t exist and were just a figment of my imagination.
PS1 had CDs, not DVDs, if memory serves (I gave mine away to my nephew so I can’t check). My PS3 has full compatibility, and with the newer ones they are selling PS1 and 2 games on the network.
A CD is still a disc… :S
…CDs and DVDs are both discs.
you sir are a f**kin retard…if it didnt play discs then what did it play?
You Fail so Hard……
failtard
I think Mr. Man must be confusing his Atari Jaguar with a PS1
hahahaha
PS2 games are gay anyway. Who wants to play them on a PS3?
Rock Band 1 & 2? Mortal Kombat? Kingdom Hearts? GTA (I found III gay, but Vice City and San Andreas were cool)? I can keep going.
I still think San Andreas is the best one out of all GTA games.
if by “gay” you mean “written by people who knew how to get the most out a little instead mistaking GPU eyecandy for gameplay then, yes PS2 (and PS1) games were most definitely “gay”.
and why would you play PS2 games on a PS3 ?
its like buying a wii or a gamecube just for play super mario bros
Not sure if troll, or just really very stupid.
haha! now let me think. . . oh yes

FYI, the air force installed Linux over the PS3 OS, so this doesn’t count. And what does this have to do with reverse compatibility anyways?
Two words – Vice City. And a few others (War of the Monsters, for example). But, yeah, All the older games seem to be more for nostalgia, like the new atari setup that plays a bunch of the old games from the 80s. Although the new space invaders game was fun, if a bit bizarre.

My PC is backwards compatible all the way back to old DOS games from the 1980s. Eat that, console wankers!
You must be dual booting, or have a really good DOS emulator.
Actually its not that hard, just use DOSBox, I’ve had no problems..

Luckily my 360 can
play xbox1 games offcourse
I was about to say, what kind of 360 do you have? XD
why do you losers argue about which console is better? All of your arguments can be boiled down to this
I cant afford both a ps3 and xbox so i’m gonna be automatically prejudiced against any [insert console] game even though both have fantastic exclusive games such as ratchet and clank, uncharted 2, halo reach and gears of war
p.s. star wars battlefront ftw!
time to get a job then.
kinda sucks, the slim ones can play PS1 games but not PS2, was hoping to finally get rid of my PS2 cus its Hogging up dust after i got my PS3
Well… if you’re not using it, why don’t you get rid of it? cause if it’s gathering dust, then it sounds like you’re not playing it anymore.
Yeah I will fully admit that I am jelly of anyone who has a PS3 that plays PS2 games.
ArchStanton, I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!
Mine does too, this person LIES!
I gotz the 60gig with the EMO chip in it, so mine works fine with all old games
It starts cutting itself.
my ps3 plays ps2 games u just got the cheap ass poor mans version
The Slim cannot play PS2…period…just tried it, it doesn’t play them.
Wouldn’t be an issue if my PS2 didn’t come down with the “DISC READ ERROR” crap….
mine plays ps2 and ps1 games. the original model is by far the best model. it may not have as much memory but i can still play all my older games plus it has 4 usb ports and all of the sd card slots
The Metal Gear Solid 4 edition does (80GB)
(I got that one!) For all oddities that don’t play right, such as the Midway Arcade Treasures discs, I’ve got my old PS2 50xxx model right next to it. I just added a bigger hard drive to the PS3. 80GB just doesn’t cut it.
SO many things….
That it cannot do.
too bad the ps3 fat does
hackkkkk
mine plays PS2 and PS1 games
Thank you for information! I will try it!
LOL , the background to the ps3 is of a hack system… does even more than ps3 expected
What ever happened to playing a game that’s just a GOOD game, and not giving a s**t about what platform it’s on?
That’s why it’s good to get out of the imprisonment of fanboyism, and just play games because of how fun they are to play.
I can think of some other things it can’t do. Cure cancer, do my homework, play games made by Nintendo or Microsoft, create a wireless thing that doesn’t even REMOTELY look like a WII ripoff, etc.
There are special models that do play ps2 and ps1 games has whole heap of card readers built in
The reason why I went to XBOX 360.
OF COURSE YOU CAN ONLY DO THAT WHEN PSN IS UP
PS2 games: If I wanted to play them I wouldn’t have bought a PS3.
They lie ps3 is backwards compattable.
old ones do… but i cant think of a time when the US army used a bunch of Suckboxes to make a supercomputer; can you?
Mine’s the original 80GB PS3 and it is backward compatible.
