I’m sure we’ll get there if this isn’t the correct answer:
He suggested that the English overlords of Ireland harvest Irish babies as a solution to hunger and the general issues of having to deal with a rebellious Irish population. Also, he thought that the baby skin would make lovely gloves for high-class, British ladies.
Actually we didn’t read that in my English lessons, we did how ever read Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein which has to be one of the best books I’ve read pity the film didn’t live up to it (no surprise).
But ‘A Modest Proposal’ seems like a book I’ll have to find now…
I rofled when I read this.
We actually had an English assignment where we had to make a skit based off of A Modest Proposal. This skit was a commercial for baby-related foods (Ie, ground babies, the EZ-Babybake Oven)–mine was a a Taco place. Twas epic.
English Lit?? Really? I haven’t had English class since 2004 and I remembered it right away…You would think trolls, of all people, would recognize one of their own…
WHo?
Jonathan Swift wrote a satire called “A Modest Proposal” where he recommended that people eat their children.
no… he suggested that poor Irish families sell their babies to be eaten by rich British people

hahahah, as Google gets bombarded with searches of Jonathan Swift… Look up “A Modest Proposal”
Isn’t that one of those things people should just know? I mean, they teach you that in school, don’t they?
You seem to have the misconception that people actually take the time to remember the things they learn in English class.
I had to get through half a year of AP English to get to this. What was the regular class reading? Pulp fiction. I cherish this piece.
I did… but I went on to get my degree in English. More fool me…
Eighteenth century Irish political satire? I don’t think they dwell much on the topic.
I read it when I was in high school.
Oh please. Most people here are less than 11. Quite sad, really.
What’s sad? That people turn 11? Damn them
I’m a high school senior we just read a modest proposal last week so yes they teach you in high school

How convenient.

English Major WIN.
Oi, I made that joke back when they posted the original one…you can go look it up I swear.
Oh, brilliant. BRILLIANT.
WOW! English Lit finally came in handy! And I thought it was totally useless.
English Lit?? Really? I haven’t had English class since 2004 and I remembered it right away…You would think trolls, of all people, would recognize one of their own…
Indeedy. The fact I studied ‘A Modest Proposal’ today notwithstanding, Swift was one of the best historical trolls ever =D
Damn now I feel old cause I read it back in 1996.
Yeah we read this in eight or ninth grade.
I whole heartedly support this measure.
Nice to see the occasional high brow humor here.
Enlightenment jokes FTW.
and they make good clothing too
We made T-shirts for “A Modest Proposal.” Great reference.
