That’s like around $8000 worth of electronics. If they didn’t buy Apple and went with other brands, they could have spent around $4000.

Apple: pay 200% for a logo.
    :)

  2. BER says:

Mac users are just that much more efficient.

    • scooter91170 says:

I’d be more tempted to say that Mac users buy them as the status symbol they are purported to be, rather than the tools they are designed to be.

You can’t use it as a media centre, it’s too small. That’s what your 50″ LCDTV is for.

You can’t really surf as too many sites use Flash, which Apple is trying to devalue so they can buy it (only real competitor to Silverlight), by refusing to allow. (Flash usage: 50% of all websites as of 08/09 and 85% of top 100 websites as of 04/10)

You can’t use them as you wish as Steve Jobs won’t let you and will brick your systems. (Any homebrew modifications)

The iPad is a poor ereader as it hurts your eyes after half an hour of usage, as the backlight isn’t natural to read with (same with iPhone).

Any phone manufacturer who blames how it’s users hold it, as an excuse is beyond belief!

But what I find most damning is that none of them are actually in use. They are all just there to show the Apple Logo.

  3. Chris says:

what a ridiculous waste of money, except for the iPhone. I could have built a supercomputer for what that all cost.

    • Anonyminous says:

what a ridiculous waste of money, INCLUDING for the iPhone. I could have built a supercomputer for what that all cost.

      FIX’D

    • Xaqtly says:

Great, now build a supercomputer, and a laptop, and an iPad and a phone for what that costs.

    • raginggoose says:

If you mean “supercomputer” by a tinkertoying a dual chip Xeon 5-series box with running Windows 7, sure. Give me a ring when you calculate 5 trillion digits of pi with that thing.

      • Me says:

        APPLE USERS

When they are done with their desk they look for 5th trillion value of pi

      • Sitting Bull says:

Who said the only alternative to Mac OS is Windows?

        • Galen75 says:

          Linux, open source FTW!

          • Mattow says:

I think W7 is good, stop trying to be E-hipster.
Linux is kind of a pain in the ass to use, u have to re-learn everything and so much compatibility problems..
Never ever had troubles with W7.

            • NotParticularlyGhetto says:

The learning curve for any OS user to another OS is similar; it might be steeper for certain distributions of Linux, but not all of them. (Ubuntu, for example, is pretty darned easy for any Windows user to use.)

    • (whisper) timmeh says:

      Can u teach??

  4. Jffrs737 says:

Maybe they should spend some of that time checking their spelling, as well?

    • Tearanny says:

Agreed!!! But, they are all too busy bashing to notice.

I use a Mac Powerbook Pro & an old ipod nano. I don’t swear to the cult of Steve Jobs. I just like having a computer I don’t have to fight to get it to do it’s job.

      • James says:

The only computer users who “fight” with their computers are those who also “fight” with their cars and other pre-programmed inanimate objects. It takes a special brand of person to insist that THEIR way is superior to the way the machine they are trying to operate is designed to function, and then to blame the machine when it fails to heed their bidding.

ALL personal computers work EXACTLY the same way … use the mouse and/or keyboard to do what the computer was designed to do. If you could figure it out for a Mac, you could figure it out for a PC … as long as you really wanted to. But you didn’t really want to, did you? What you REALLY wanted was Apple gear, because all of the cool people own it, don’t they?

Not bashing … just pointing out the obvious.

  5. Robert says:

Why would I want to have a computer that “keeps me busy”? I would much rather have a computer that allows me to do what I want to with my time, rather than one that sucks my time away.

    • rulz says:

i think the captionist meant entertained when he/she said busy…

    • Rift says:

You’d want it to suck your time away in cases of extreme boredom, via entertainment. I have to agree, though. From my experience Mac users don’t get the luxury to keep themselves busy, which is both a good and bad thing.

  6. Xaqtly says:

I don’t get it. It’s a bad thing to be organized now? Only Mac users are organized? It’s the computer’s responsibility to keep you busy? No part of this caption makes any god damn sense at all.

  7. Pandora says:

wow, this guy FAILS at spelling. Orginizing? It’s ORGANIZING, genius.

  8. O'RLY Factor says:

If your computer is good enough you won’t want to leave it and wont mind making a mess all around it.

    • Mrmaginz says:

      Soooo….
      If your computer’s good enough….
It will never give you up, let you down, run around, or desert you?

      • hemoglobin says:

correct, it will never say goodbye, never make you cry, never tell a lie, or hurt you (unless steve jobs bricks it)

  9. Anonymous says:

This whole set-up costs a mac user upwards of $15,000 (assuming he bought the iphone outright)
Whereas a comparable custom built PC, an android phone and a USB PVR would cost at MOST $5,000
    Problem, mac users?

    • Xaqtly says:

You forgot about the laptop and the tablet. Also:

      iMac: $1199
      iPad: $599
      iPhone: $199
      Macbook pro: $1199
      Total: $3,196

      Problem, idiot?

      • Someguy says:

        For the same specs:
        Custom-built: 600$
        Samsung Galaxy: 449$
        Android: 199$
        Laptop: 800-1200$
        Total:2050 to 2450.
As you put it so eloquently, problem, idiot?

        • Thatguy says:

I built a PC laptop to the specs and brand names that Mac uses and installing Win 7 ultimate and wow it came out $200 dollars more then my Mac. And that one will be here soon.

        • diane says:

          My laptop was only $370…
Toshiba with 3GB RAM, 300 GB HD, 15.6 inch.
(Not identical to the default MBP, but close, and much, much less.)

        • Justice says:

A $600-800 premium is still much less than what most Windows users would claim it is…

      • Squirrel says:

$1800 Macbook Pro (no way that one is a 13 inch, 15 inchers start at 1800)
        $1500 for the iMac (Doesn’t look big enough to be 27″, 21.5 start @ 1200 but there’s probably upgrades/applecare)
$700 iPad (since they probably went with the data plan)
$600 iPhone (no contract cost, cuz you’re still paying for it in the contract)
Total is 4600, but there’s probably more accessories to round it out to an even 5000.

For the supercomputer idea, let’s go with a PS3 supercomputer, since they really don’t have any other use right now.
        $5000 / $300 = 17 PS3s
        or $5000 / $200 = 25 PS3s
So approximately 1% of the processing power of the USAF 1760-PS3 cluster

        For a comparable non-mac setup:
$1000 to build a PC equivalent to the iMac
        $850 for an equivalent laptop
$650 for Galaxy Tab 3G (not much savings here)
        $500 for Samsung Captivate
        $3000 Total

So Apple Tax is about $2000 for all of that…

        • GLaDOS's Mailer Daemon says:

What is being attempted here is to make a quantitative assessment about qualitative data of which very little is actually had. Forgive me for stating the obvious, but factors like longevity, maintenance requirements, additional software, upgrades, support options, aesthetics, available accessories, and even environmental friendliness are all factors that throw spokes into attempts to balance product sets on just price.

        • Justice says:

Wrong. That is the 13 inch. I have the 13 inch, and that’s about the right size compared to the smaller wireless keyboard.

The rest (upgrades? Outright iPhone purchase? Apple care?) is just assumptions on your part. So… you’re off by a minimum of $1000. You’re just padding the results to make yourself feel better.

Hmm… If I bought a solid platinum encased Sony laptop with a blu ray player, it would have been $230,000 more than my Apple setup! So… take that!

          • hemoglobin says:

…. i honestly cant tell if your trolling or that much of a moron, platinum is the single most valuable precious metal on the market of course it would be more expensive to encase a laptop in it, and i assume by upgrades he means apples brilliant “we know youll pay full price three times over when we add a camera, a nicer camera, and paint it white!”

          • Chris says:

Yeah, but that argument if invalid since the only difference between the two hardware is the name brand for the apple stuff. Neither of them have platinum cases.

    • Johnny Two Toes says:

I suppose if you bought the top of the line with all the upgrades it would be over $15k. My quick estimation puts it around $5.5K ($2k for lappy, $2k for desktop, but it looks like it’s just a monitor hooked to the lappy, $800 for ipad, and $700 for iphone).

Anyways, I prefer Mac, i’ve had mine for 6 years no problems, my wife’s computer has had 3 viruses and crashed once in the past 2 years.

      • BER says:

That’s an iMac, not a monitor.

      • awrln says:

PEBKAC… If you had her comp it probably should have been fine.

      • Thatguy says:

I’m with you. ONly getting PC for Bad Company 2 and soon 3. My2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 17″ 8GB ram MBP cost is really over a grand less then the Dell with matching specs costs.

So I guess the Windows PC tax is over $1000.

I like how people try to compare a cheap laptop to a top line system. Want me to brake down my MacPro and then what it would cost to make a computer to match it?

        • NotParticularlyGhetto says:

          Wait, what?

Just priced these out on Apple and Dell.com, using your specs.
The MacBook Pro is $2950 with nothing but the specs you listed. The Alienware M17x (Dell’s only offering in 17″ with an i7) can’t even get as low as an ATI 6750M video card, so I used the lowest one, a 6870M… and the Dell box is $2220.

Where’s this $1000 higher on the Dell that you’re talking about?

          • NotParticularlyGhetto says:

Oh, and for reference… that’s matching the processors, memory, same capacity hard drive with slightly higher rotational speed on the Dell, same optical drive specs, and a faster video card with the same amount of video RAM.

Alienware is Dell’s boutique brand; it’s not “cheap” hardware.

    • BER says:

Um, yeah — a problem with your math. A couple grand for an iMac. A couple grand more for the MacBook. Around a grand for the iPhone and iPad together. I’m seeing a total around $5K, a third of what you claim but equal to what you say you’d pay for less non-Mac equipment (no laptop, no tablet, and I’m not sure how a PVR came into the picture, but whatever). Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

  10. Steve says:

So many butt-hurt mac users here.

  11. twiggy says:

ha im actually doing like 4 things on my imac… and eating a cookie

  12. Weasil666 says:

I only use Apple and my desk is covered with crap. Jar of pennies, empty soda cans, plates…

Sure, I could go into some pointless argument about why Apple/Mac is better, but really, I use it because I was raised on it and it meets my needs. The games I want to play work on it, and most of what I do is fart around on the internet, anyway. I use what I know and what I like. You’re free to do the same.

  13. Macuser says:

    hatters gonna hate…

  14. Some Guy says:

I just hit 4.7ghz on my Core i7 2600k, giving my CPU a proccessing power of around 100GFlops. Meanwhile my 8gb of ram and dual GTX 570s play games great, along with no loading speed because of my dual SSD RAID 0 setup + dual HDD raid 0 setup.

    My comp is $2000.

    LOL U jelly mac users?

    • Ignignokt says:

You probably have a huge penis.

    • fergie434 says:

not really. using some one elses mac..
      $0 vs $2000
      u jelly?

    • Brick says:

I have friends and can throw a ball. Jelly?

    • gcs8 says:

you know your not supost to raid SSD’s right? my old i7-920 @4.2GH will still out pefrom your silly 2600k due to the fact that it uses DDR3 in dual channel config, your PCI-E bandwith is lower and 8GB of ram is not that much, my 2 year old rig has 12GB of DDR3 1600 haveing a new rig that only has 8GB is a waste when you can get 24GB for what i paid for 12GB 2 years ago. even the intel reps still say the 1366 is still the way to go for the best power.

and to the mac users, your systems have the biggest security holes ever, the reason you only have ~8 real virus’ right now is beacouse no one wants to waste there time on 5% of the population. i have only had one virus in the last 8 years on my windows PC and that was the last time my g/f ever touched my PC. i dont run anti virus and dont need to, i have from time to time with 7 differnt anti-virus solutions scaned my rig and never found anything. you want to start makeing valid arguments? know both sides of the fight. move 80% of the windows users to mac for 2 years and watch how many mac’s fill up with crap due to uneducated users that cant tell there display from there tower and see if your e-penis is as big as you think it is.

      • gcs8 says:

Oh and the only time my rig has ever crashed is when I pushed past 4.3GHz and just needed to up my voltage a very small amount, not an OS issue. More Mac’s have died on me then PC’s. (Also Mac is a PC (personal computer) just easer for the unwashed masses to fallow.)

        • Xaqtly says:

It’s too bad you don’t actually know what a security hole is or how you would access one. And there are zero – ZERO – viruses for the Mac. A virus can self propagate and install itself WITHOUT your permission. There is nothing that can do that on OS X.

I mean if OS X has such massive security holes, how would you get into my Mac and get my information, for example? Please be specific. Tello me exactly how you would do it. Keep in mind nobody at any pwn2own contest has EVER been able to get into a Mac remotely.

          • Jedit says:

Yes, I recall an advert a few years ago touting the fact that there were tens of thousands of viruses for PCs and none for OS X. A virus programmer commented on this advert, pointing out that to propagate a virus, both host and victim need to be running the same software. So, the one and only reason there are no viruses for OS X is because not enough people use it to make the effort of coding a virus worthwhile.

          • NotParticularlyGhetto says:

You *are* kidding, right? OS/X has been owned numerous times over the years.

            Just one example: http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/11802

          • Chris says:

There’s never any important information to be stolen in a mac. Just pretty photoshop collages and ifilms. And hipster portraits.

          • Mark says:

If there is “zero’ viruses for Macs… why do they make Mac anti Viruses?

There is Mac viruses, however there is also MANY more Microsoft PC viruses, and there are also many more people using Windows based “pcs”.

The one thing that many people overlook is that a Mac IS a PC “personal computer”. I’m not going to get into the Mac vs MS debate because of the silliness that always ensues. I will simply say I have had MS based PC for over 15 years and in all that time I have gotten 2 viruses – once was my fault for downloading unsafe programs.

If you use your computer with any sort of regard for the fact that viruses exist then you won’t get them. To each their own. Me personally I don’t like the idea of paying extra for a computer that doesn’t have the ability to allow me to make changes to how my system runs. Macs are for people that don’t want to learn how to use a computer. The stability and options that come with Windows based systems allow me to do my graphics, do my work and play games. I like to be able to upgrade at a reasonable cost, for all those reasons I choose a Windows based PC. If you Mac users want to spend that money – your dime not mine. But, for the love of GOD please stop pretending that one system somehow makes you better that someone else. Mac has always fed that delusion and you are buying into the marketing 100%.

            • Ash Mac says:

Mark – “But, for the love of GOD please stop pretending that one system somehow makes you better that someone else.”

… You mean like what your doing? Lolz

  15. Bob says:

Dollars… hm. It seems to be worse here….

I went to my local apple store…. Mac, £1200…. similiar pricing at Pc world got you an epic gaming pc… well, as epic as a store brought set up can be. I admit, the 16gig of ram sways me… but why wouldn’t it?

  16. Moosetahkrakish says:

I have a PC because I actually like being able to run games and useful programs on it without finding work around.

    • bob says:

i have a mac because i can run steam and any program worthwhile. I also like not worrying about viruses or crashes

      • OneLonelyPickle says:

If you honestly think you are immune to viruses / crashes on a Mac, then congratulations, you’ve fallen for their marketing ploy!

        You’re Winner!

      • AndreGon says:

Mac os has more security holes than windows.
Windows is more targeted by hackers than anyother system, so it has to have more security.
If windows would have the same kind of security as mac os, microsoft would be screwed.

    • Resoku says:

I run Windows on my iMac. All games and useful programs you speak of are ran without any problems. =]

      • Orly says:

All the while paying 150% price. Mactardism FTW of corporate greed.

      • Chris says:

Yo dawg, we heard you like to work but you only have a mac, so we put a real computer in your apple computer so you can do more work while you try to work.

  17. Jack says:

Stop comparing PC to Mac. PC is for the Average person/Gamers. Mac is for Work, people who like their computers to be safe, simple, and easy to use, and people who make stuff such as games or programs and all that. Get a PC if you need a cheap/gaming computer. And Mac if you need to work a lot. Note why Apples are in workplaces, and PC’s are in your house.

    • gezana says:

Uh, what? Macs in the workplace? I don’t know who the hell you’re working for, but I can’t say I have ever seen an office full of Macs.

      • mark says:

then clearly you’ve never been to any design bureaus. or at least not any good ones. mac is all there ever is, because no one trusts pc’s for those kind of things.

      • Thatguy says:

Sure. Ever been in a school? My building is 80% Mac. Publishing companies. Graphic design offices. I work with both Mac and Windows. If I had to pick I’d go Mac only. Then again I can dual boot and I get both.

I don’t really care what someone wants to use. Though if you are going to compare then build to the same specs and don’t forget what the Windows costs Which is over $200 because only the 64bit Windows(most likely ultimate) can compare to the 64bit Mac that you get on any Mac you buy.

        • gcs8 says:

You can get win7 ultimate for $183, and 64 bit is cheaper because Microsoft wants people to move to the 64 bit platform.

      • GLaDOS's Mailer Daemon says:

They have been proven to be more cost-effective in enterprise environments…

      • cosmovern says:

        Then your office sucks…

      • Xaqtly says:

I manage an office full of Macs. You lose.

      • NotParticularlyGhetto says:

I have to chime in in support of the Mac side here — there are workplaces that use them extensively, especially in the fields of advertising and graphic arts.

Yes, most verticals do still use Windows, but there are several that don’t. (And OS/X isn’t the only other option…)

    • Sitting Bull says:

Considering that today’s Macs are hardwarewise indistinguishable from PCs, I don’t understand why people still use this terminology. This dichotomy do not exist anymore. Today’s Macs have x86 Intel processors and PC architecture.

You can get an Apple computer and install Windows in it, and you can get a computer from another brand and install Mac OS in it. The terminology “Mac vs. PC” have no sense at all today.

      • NotParticularlyGhetto says:

Well, except that if Apple figures out that you’re running Mac OS on non-Apple hardware, they will do what they can to make sure it is no longer running on that hardware.

      • Chris says:

So like how most of us are trying to explain. It all boils down to spending more money for the “same” hardware, just because its from apple.
        Thanks!

    • AndreGon says:

did you ever see NASA or the Large Hadron Collider scientists with macs?
I believe i won this round.

    • Mark says:

BS ! over 80% of workplaces use Windows based systems. The only area where that is not the case is design companies.

That will not change until (if ever) Mac makes an effort to make their systems more affordable to the average user.

      Quoting the Toronto Star
“PCs dominate market share at about 90 per cent. They also dominate the workplace: Most people use PCs by day, which are generally associated with work-specific tasks.”

  18. Normal Dude says:

I have never, ever seen such a big bunch of nerds discussing about computers, you guys are the reason why girls never stop asking me out, c ya losers….

  19. johnny says:

ha, you guys and your windows and macs, i go Linux

but i will admit that windows is better than mac, by a long shot

  20. Squirrel says:

    Copying this from above: http://goo.gl/jvoXq

  21. Ayla says:

    i just came….

  22. Sean says:

    Obviously it’s Wes Anderson’s desk.

  23. Mrmaginz says:

[Inserts comment about how comparing Macs to PCs is like comparing Xbox 360s to PS3s.]

You will have butt-hurting nerds on both sides of the argument. The only hope you have of derailing the argument is to throw in a pointless bit of irony so they will argue whether it’s ironic or no- Oh look! A cat in a tree!

  24. Mrmaginz says:

“Disappears in a cloud of pot smoke, point made.”

  25. GLaDOS's Mailer Daemon says:

Oh gosh I’m arranging my desk to look like that right now.

  26. scraverX says:

Yes. It is possible to build a windows based PC with matching or batter specs for less. No disputing that.

Try do it in the same footprint for that low price. (Yes, I have.)

    • Galen75 says:

What are you trying to make, pancakes or waffles?

    • Mad_Kitteh says:

My Windows laptop cost more then my Mac laptop. Same specs. Both using top brand equipment. Problem with the whole I built mine for less is that most people buy off brand or from the lowest sellers price. Off brand is hit or miss as is the cheap sellers.

Just wish my Windows laptop came with a case as good as the Mac.

      • NotParticularlyGhetto says:

See above, where I questioned Thatguy’s math, and repeat.

The only real thing (and it’s not a little one) that Macs bring to the table that no other x86/x64 OEM does is design aesthetics. They do a good job making things pretty and simple.

For a lot of users, that’s a good thing.

  27. Brick says:

    Go outside.

  28. christellar says:

As an apple user I do not get this whatsoever. No I’m not blonde…

    • Rath says:

You’re one of them soulless gingers aren’t you? Ever notice since Apple started getting over 10% of the market share you see a lot more gingers around? I’m pretty sure that’s a sign of the applepocalypse.

  29. schlecter says:

Not trying to dis Macs(they are better for graphical design stuff/video or music editing) but i have never had a virus on my computer that I’ve had for about 3 years(yes I have updated it heavily) I also do not visit questionable sights with it(I use my bro’s for that ;) ) Anyway, after Alexander Hamilton shot Arron Burr he was know by all as a bad ass mother f*****, and not to be fought in bars, because he would shoot your ass in a duel like a boss……

My parents are separated, one has the PC (which I am on right now) and the other has a Mac. When I’m on one I always, invariably, want to go to the other. My Mac has Logic Pro, all my DAZStudio stuff is installed there. My PC has games. I’d never, ever be able to give either one up. I’m getting a Macbook so I don’t have to wait until I’m at my mom’s to use the Mac, just gonna transfer everything over. So I ask, “Why can’t we be friends, why can’t we be friends~?”
