EYJAFJALLAJOKULL
the art of naming volcanoes correctly
Submitted by: Unknown
Sure……blame the kitty for a typo……
The comic mastermind (not me; I’m just a fan) known as “The Oatmeal” deserves credit for this joke.
Oh dear God… he forgot the E on that ridiculously named volcano… SHUN HIM!!!
“ridiculously named volcano”
THAT’S RACIST!
(inb4 Icelandic isn’t a race)
actually, the name is Eyjafjallajökull, you forget the ¨
I came on here to say just that lol
Same here xD
Me too, but unfortunately the Lol-builder won’t support Umlauts.
Well in German we then use oe instead of ö, not sure about Icelandic though.
ae/oe is the official to write ä/ö. just look inside a passport of someone with those characters in their name (on the machine read line at the bottom).
Then use your own damn image manipulator and do it yourself.
Or know the alt-code for ö,ä,ü etc.
pplz someone put that guy’s picture in Who wants t be millionaire who had that question! xD
The picture you are refering to is from a parody video. I loved it too. Here you go :
Uh… Come on people. It’s a completely different volcano. Obviously the other one was already named but they needed a name for a new one that just recently erupted. It just so happened that volcano-name keyboard-mash produced a similar series of letters. Can’t blame the poor poster for a coincidence.
Either way, it’s not like we can pronounce it anyway…
it’s true. i’m a big pronunciation freak, and i’m just sitting here trying and failing to pronounce it right.
Whats so difficult: eyja – fjalla – jokull…
I’m sure that’s really simple for everyone who speaks Icelandic.
It’s easy.
pronounced [ˈɛɪjaˌfjatl̥aˌjœkʰʏtl̥]
According to a pretty woman singer who was on:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/7611205/Iceland-volcano-song-aids-pronunciation-of-Eyjafjallajokull.html
it just means “Island mountain glacier” it’s actually 3 words but together, kind of like Germans do it.
SUP dawg, I heard you like volcanoes, so we put a glacier on an island mountain , so you can look at volcanoes while looking at a mountain which is on an island and has a glacier on the side.
Nope, im speaking only Russian, German, English and Japanese. However, none of this languages has such names.
Its more like you simply put 3 words together justlikethat.^^
^this
Donaudampfschiffartskapitänsmützenhakenbefestigungszertifikatstinte?
Nooo, we don’t have such names. Not at all.
…schifffahrt… schreibt man mit drei f
IPA would help as most, myself included, have no idea how all those letters are pronounced in Icelandic…
The t’s that comes before the L-sounds throw me off.
Someone added IPA, thanks.
And here I was thinking I was the only one nerdy enough to know the IPA
Oh wow, I’m just dying because of how relevant and current this joke is.
Are you about to blow your top?
Next frame will be:
HUMANS: always want to prove they are better than cats
C’mon, folks. How do you think Ikea comes up with names for their products?
Woo! An original and timely comment on an original and timely poster! Amzing11!
Thank you, good sir, for making me inhale my ice cream.
Ikea product names are real swedish words.
I read somewhere that some guy made a program to detect the keypresses done by his cat and ignore them
