  1. Lamarr says:

    Eric Cartman approves.

  2. Zero says:

I remember a hoax article supposedly from the WHO that said the same thing about blondes.

    • Benny says:

I remember that too. Didn’t hear the part about it being a hoax, though.
To me, it makes sense. For a long time, blondes were in fairly sheltered communities among other blondes (think Nordic villages). Now that the world is so integrated, blondes will more and more frequently breed with dominant hair colors (brunettes and black-hairs). Blonde being a recessive gene, will inevitably lose out. The same can be said of red-heads.

      • Yuukiko_Ogawa says:

Genetics doesn’t quite work that way, especially with recessive genes.

Genetic drift means that because of all that inter-breeding with darker haired people, eventually the population will reach a point where EVERYONE will have a few blonde/redhead genes. Put two people with enough copies of those genes together and suddenly you start having dark-haired parents having blonde and red-haired children.

So the pattern is basically “very few blondes/redheads for a few generation, then suddenly blondes and redheads everywhere!”

Also, red hair occurs just about everywhere. The difference is the shade of red; the genes for the red pigment are seperate than the ones for blonde/brown/black hair. The shade of red you get depends on where you are in the blonde/brown/black spectrum. There are plenty of darker-haired people who have the genes for red hair, it’s just layered over black or dark brown so it’s harder to notice than someone who has genes for red and blonde hair instead.

        /end rant.

      • eddy says:

THe same is true for caucasian people, or ‘whites’ . It was a recessive gene, or mutation, and simply a lack of skin pigmentation. SO any breeding with ‘other strains.’ I’m not being rascist mind you, just stating facts. :) ,

The Who? Well, I won’t get fooled again.

  3. Wyvern says:

Insert joke about not having souls here.

  4. denNIS says:

so, Redheads need to get it on to save their fellow hair colour friends?

  5. Maiq the Truther says:

    Marry ALL the redheads!

  6. kjjk says:

I really don’t believe this. I have been hearing this since the 90′s.

  7. hank says:

Red hair is a recessive gene. It won’t be extinct so much as… dormant.

Worst case, red dye sales go up?

  8. Fatefinger says:

I have red hair. The last person in my family on either side that had red hair was 3 generations back. My great granparents.

Although everyone calls it “strawberry blonde”. No, its red. It’s just sunbleached since I’m outside so much in a desert state.

    !species

  10. malkiot says:

This article is from http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/226783, they also corrected themselves in this article http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/226783, stating that the previous article was incorrect.

  11. bigd1179 says:

    evolution?

  12. GBG says:

Best news I’ve heard all week!

  13. natalie says:

My brother has red. It’s not bright red like with irish people though, his hair is closer to brown. No one in my family knows where it comes from since no one else in my family has or had had red hair. Maybe a bunch of generations back?

  14. TheFoot says:

    Nooooooooooo!..

Quick where do I sign up to help keep the gene going? Im a recessive redhead myself (father was a really ‘red’ redhead). Im willing to spread my seed for the cause.

  15. steve says:

It’s ok guys, we have HAIR DYE,
    Redheads will never be extinct.

  16. doodie says:

So…. we can’t breed with them?

  17. Ashley says:

red heads of the world unite!!!!

  18. DarthSatoris says:

I read that as “rednecks” and was happy for a moment… then I got sad.

  19. AKobold says:

Probably due to lack of soul…

  20. mob says:

Not bad as a hooking line “Hey you know that you are an endagered species and you need to reproduce as much as you can?”

  21. Dan says:

The first paragraph of that article reads

“soon they will become extinct in the next 100 years”.

No article worth its salt would use such a tautology.

It also felt the need to tell us what Shakespeare did for a living… as if we’re all unlikely to know who he was!?!?!?

    • scienceguy says:

The writer also completely messed up the effects of the mutation(s). it says “gene had the beneficial effect of increasing the body’s ability to cope with sunlight; it helped make vitamin D from Sunlight”

Everyones skin makes Vit. D from sunlight, gingers just make more, and this increases the ability to cope with the LACK of sunlight, which is a problem for people living far north (or south)

    • shin0bi272 says:

remember that when algore starts spouting off about global warming and how we have 10 years to stop it.

  22. Morphy says:

I still volunteer to breed as often as possible with Nicole Kidman…

  23. Hakan says:

When you say protect, you mean “touch”???
    then: +2 !!!

  24. purehatred89 says:

This is the kind of conversation a guy could get behind.

    Giggity.

  25. Oggie says:

    …we are winning…

  26. LordFlashheart says:

Send all the hot female redheads around to mine. I’ll protect them.
    :-)

  27. lucas13789 says:

We could just turn Scotland in to a giant conservation area and the problem will sort itself out (if you consider redhead extinction a problem of course…)

  28. maryavatar says:

I’m doing my best! I’m a redhead and I married a guy carrying the red gene (ginger beard). Unfortunately we got one chestnut, one mousey brown and a blonde.

Still, my blonde niece and her blond partner have bred three startlingly ginger kids, so I guess it all evens out.

    Stupid recessive genes.

  29. deeeetz says:

    Like the Gingersaurus

  30. I think redheads are hottt (with three Ts!)

  31. Kinseth says:

Hot damn, do I love redheads. They better not go extinct (as if that would even be possible, lol).

  32. Echo says:

Wait, the ability to cope with what?

  33. Christina says:

Red-spectrum colors are super dominate on my mom’s side, despite red being a generally recessive trait. My siblings and I all have it, yet my dad’s side is all Italian dark/etc browns and stuff AKA not carrottop. Take that, genetics! >:D

  34. I better go get David Caruso and help out!

  35. Asian SinSation says:

Please people, do not panic. I have instituted a carefully controlled breeding program with the goal of averting this pending disaster. Please send all the redheads you can find to address below. Each will be carefully evaluated and if they pass my rigorous exam they will be promptly and repeatedly bred. With a bit luck I should have the redhead population increasing in no time. :~)

  36. CPU64 says:

I wouldn’t mind being friendzoned to a redhead..

  37. Tom says:

You do realize that this means that if you don’t have red hair you can never have sex with a red head again…….ever.

  38. Funzo says:

This is untrue, but I banged my redhead wife earlier just to be sure.

  39. Harald Bloodaxe says:

Whats really funny, is that the most stereotypic redheads, the Scottish and Irish, are not actually Scottish or Irish! They are in fact descendants from the viking colonistation (and raping) in the Viking age. Because it was in Scandinavia that the “redhead mutation” originated. So when both blondes and redheads originate from a few hundred thousand Danes, Norse and Sweeds…. And you see how it has spread around the world….. I dont think we have to be protected. I think the rest of the world have to be protected from us. :-)

And btw: That redheads are actually of viking heritage, just make them more awsome. And gives us with common heritage a prety good pickup line when we go viking the modern way. :-)
